Ilmuwan asal Jepang berhasil menciptakan steak berbahan feses tersebut. Adalah Mitsuyuki Ikeda dari Okayama Laboratory yang menciptakan steak langka itu. Ia tak cuma iseng sebab inovasinya adalah respon dari masalah yang dihadapi Tokyo Sewage, badan pengelola limbah kota Tokyo.

Populasi manusia menimbulkan akumulasi lumpur limbah mengandung feses yang berlebihan. Kandungan protein yang tinggi dalam lumpur limbah jadi pemicu munculnya ide langka Ikeda. Ia lalu mengekstrak protein dan menambahkan pemercepat reaksi serta melakukan pemrosesan hingga steak feses itu pun tercipta.
